Thuraya interception system

The Thuraya Satellite Interception System has been designed to monitor as well as decrypt voice, SMS, Fax and data communication. It offers an auto-classification process, which automatically finds out and identifies the type of intercept i.e. voice, SMS, fax, and data communication. It decrypts the voice, SMS, and fax and data communication almost in real time. Since the system monitors both Uplink and Downlink from the L-band, it displays activity of BCCH, AGCH, PCH, BACH, FACCH, SACCH, SDCCH, and RACH. The system is also integrated to mapping tool to provide the geographic location of the suspect.

Fixed Thuraya Interception System

Fixed Thuraya Interception System is designed and developed, as a Passive Static Thuraya Interception System, which logs the location of MES operating within user-selected spot beams.

Fixed Thuraya Interception System uses a scanning technique to identify C-band downlink frequencies for spot beams of interest. These channels can subsequently be monitored to record the position of mobiles operating within that spot beam, and capture details of the telephone numbers that the mobile contact. The scanning process is performed once in 24 hours, as the frequencies used are dynamically allocated, and change periodically by Thuraya satellite.

The position of the target will be known to within GPS accuracy, (typically 10-20 meters under current conditions) and it would then be possible to mount direct surveillance of the target.

Thuraya has a pair of signaling channels; one signaling channel is transmitted at L-band by satellite and received by all Thuraya Phones in the spot beam. This signaling channel is called Broadcast Common Control Channel (BCCH). In addition to BCCH, Access Grant Control, Channel (AGCH), Paging Control Channel (PCH), frequency Correction Channel and Basic Alerting Channel are also time division multiplexed on the same carrier.

The other signaling channel is called Random Access Control Channel. RACH provides access to the network for Thuraya Phones. All Thuraya Phones within the spot beams transmits burst at L-Band on the RACH Channel, these bursts are relayed to PGW at the C-band by the satellite.

Each receiver is independently tunable to any spot beam of the Thuraya Network. Fixed Thuraya Interception System is intended to ensure interception and deciphering of voice conversation & SMS from L-band Thuraya network in a mobile environment.

The Thuraya Interception System monitors L-Band link from mobile to satellite and C-Band feeder link from satellite to the earth station. Since the power transmitted by the mobile handset on the uplink is very less and it is difficult to monitor so the system monitors this information on the C-band downlink (satellite to earth). The system will automatically map the uplink RACH control channel and the appropriate TCH channel of the suspect’s handset at the C-band to appropriate L-band downlink channel of the target spot beam.

  • The system is capable of intercepting several spot beams. Being a modular architecture, the capability of the system in terms of a number of calls can be increased by adding extra hardware.
  • Coverage area can be changed by the operator according to the priority of intelligence mission.
  • All Thuraya communication in the coverage is intercepted.
  • The location of the target is mapped on the cartographic background.
  • All mobile units will be displayed on a GIS map. Indicating Targeted, Known and unknown users. The GIS subsystem is connected to the database and is updated regularly.
  • Capability to intercept all communication in both uplink and downlink directions.
  • Uplink information is intercepted by the C-band link from the satellite earth station.
  • The system will automatically map the uplink RACH control channel and the appropriate TCH channel at the C-band to appropriate L-band downlink channel of the target spot beam.
  • The modular architecture of the system allows further expansion of the system.
  • The system maintains the internal call data record for each communication with all identity parameters that can be intercepted for each call.
  • All calls are recorded and are available for real-time interception.
  • If the intercepted call is not of interest, the operator can terminate the call, thus freeing the receiver for interception of other calls.

  • Ciphering algorithm type and ciphering key sequence number.
  • The system can intercept and log Voice and Text Messages (SMS) in near real-time after the call has been completed.
  • The audio is recorded in a proprietary compressed format which can be converted to standard wave format. The audio along with the CRI can be exported to standard formats.
  • The intercepted SMS can be viewed using special SMS viewer software integrated with the system.
Portable Thuraya Interception System

Portable Thuraya Satellite Interception System is designed and developed as a Passive Portable Thuraya Satellite Interception System, which logs the location of Thuraya handset operating within user-selected spot beams, and the telephone numbers with which they communicate. The Surveillance of L-band (b/w Thuraya satellite and Thuraya mobile both uplink and downlink), provides total traffic interception of the targeted spot beam. Thuraya Satellite Interception System uses state of art technology for the deciphering of cipher algorithms used on Thuraya network. Thuraya Satellite Interception System uses proprietary technology to scan the active spot beams in the coverage range of the antenna and after scanning provides the list of available active spot beams with spot beam ID, latitude, and longitude of the center of the spot beam, signal strength and signal quality. Once the scanning is completed, the operator can tune the system to spot beam of interest.

Portable Thuraya Satellite Interception System can be configured to monitor the call in simplex as well as in duplex mode depending upon the settings of the system and availability of the radio signals. Three different modes of interception are possible:

  • Interception of forward channel from one beam. (Simplex Mode).
  • Interception of forward and reverse channel from one spot beam. (Duplex Mode).
  • Interception of forward channel from two different spot beams. (simple Mode).

The Portable Thuraya Satellite Interception System has been designed to monitor and decrypt voice, SMS, Fax and data communication.   • The GIS mapping software integrated with the system is based on industrial standard products and has the capability of displaying finer details. The software has the option for Zoom in and Zoom out. With a closer zoom the user can view contour, terrain, roads, tracks, towns, villages etc.
  • The intercepted SMS can be viewed using special SMS viewer software integrated with the system.
  • The system will generate alerts in case of malfunctioning of any subsystem.
